Women of the Cloud Forest — Makers with a Mission
Every luminary on our shelf was thrown by hand on a kick wheel and fired in a wood kiln by a family workshop in Nicaragua.
The Story
Women of the Cloud Forest has worked directly with artisan families and co-operatives in Nicaragua, Nepal, Ecuador and Peru since 2001. It offers its artisans no-interest micro-loans and grants, and it has been a member of the Fair Trade Federation since 2008. Its US home is in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The Luminaries
Each clay luminary is thrown on a kick wheel, hand-etched and wood-fired by a family workshop in San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua. Set a candle inside and the design glows through the clay.
Ours include monarch and blue morpho butterflies, a tiger swallowtail, a ruby-throated hummingbird, spring and winter cardinals, a honeybee, a painted dragonfly and the Three Kings.
Why We Carry Them
Fair pay, direct relationships and real investment in the people who make the work: that is exactly the kind of maker Ever-Change was built to support. And in a shop named for butterflies, a butterfly luminary made by hand was an easy yes.
